What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy (sometimes known as The Bowen Technique or Bowen Fascia Release) is a remedial therapy that is applied using very light pressure, yet it is extremely effective and very relaxing.  The therapist uses thumbs and fingers to perform rolling type moves on precise points of the body over tendons, muscles and soft tissue, to stimulate the body to reset, repair and re-balance.  Bowen Therapy treats the body as a whole, aiming to balance the body’s core alignment; the reason for this is that where you are feeling pain or discomfort may not necessarily be the source of the issue, for example if your jaw is tight or out of alignment, it can have a knock-on effect and cause issues in the rest of your body.

What to expect from Bowen Therapy treatment

The first appointment will last approximately one hour as detailed case notes will be taken and subsequent appointments will last around 45 minutes.  To receive maximum benefit, initially treatments should be scheduled at 7-10 day intervals and an initial set of four sessions is recommended in order to establish your response to treatment.   A further one or two sessions may be required depending on the severity of issues and how long they’ve been present.  Maintenance treatments are highly recommended and these can be scheduled to suit your individual requirements.

Whilst having a course of Bowen Therapy it is recommended that other therapies are not mixed at the same time; for example, massage, reflexology, physiotherapy.  This is to ensure that the body is not overloaded and to establish whether any changes are as a result of your Bowen treatment.

Like any therapy, alternative, complimentary or conventional, a small percentage of people may not fully respond to Bowen Therapy for a specific issue, although will always benefit from having had a treatment.  It should be noted that Bowen Therapy is not a medical treatment or a substitute for medical advice.
